Do you experience frequent nightmares or unwanted, uncontrollable thoughts and or memories of previous trauma(s)?
Do you often feel tense, on guard, fearful when you’re not in danger? Maybe you avoid situations that bring back those memories, have trouble concentrating and/or trouble with your sleep?
You may be suffering from PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder.
Some people who go through a traumatic event may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they get better within the first few weeks and months after the trauma.
For others, the symptoms can last for many years, especially if they go untreated.
PTSD is a disorder that can develop in some people who have experienced or witnessed a shocking, scary, or dangerous event in their lives.
PTSD can also develop when someone close to you like a friend or family member experiences a traumatic event. Anyone can develop PTSD at any age.
People who experience traumatic events or who have PTSD also may experience panic disorder, depression, substance use, or suicidal thoughts.
There are three main types of trauma:
Acute, Chronic or complex.
Acute trauma results from a single incident.
Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse.
Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature.
PTSD can affect a person's ability to work, perform day-to-day activities or relate to their family and friends. A person with PTSD can often seem uninterested or distant as they try not to think or feel to block out painful memories.
Melissa has special training and extensive experience in treating individuals with complex PTSD through Trauma-Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
This specific psychotherapy is one of the most effective psychotherapies used for treating PTSD.
Melissa is also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is another highly effective therapeutic approach in treating PTSD.
Both therapy approaches are specifically designed to help you process upsetting memories, thoughts, and feelings related to your trauma.
By processing these experiences, most clients will experience relief from their PTSD symptom in approximately three months of weekly sessions.
